At Newtown School sport plays an essential part in the educational programme. A comprehensive Physical Education curriculum is supported by an extensive extracurricular programme. The emphasis is on participation. Our internal “clan competitions” encourage everyone to get involved. Students also represent the school in a wide range of sports teams with much success and honest endeavour.

The Newtown School swimming pool
Swimming and Lifesaving
The swimming pool is open each afternoon facilitating swimming and lifesaving. The Clan swimming Gala is always a lively event. Lifesaving takes place in our 25m indoor swimming pool and it is a very valuable skill to learn along with providing a tough physical challenge for the swimmers.
Lifesaving follows the Irish Water Safety (IWS) courses leading all the way to International pool lifeguard qualifications.

Tennis at Newtown School
Tennis
Tennis is available all year on the Tennis courts. During the spring and summer terms teams compete in the Munster leagues. The In-House Clan tennis tournament provides great excitement during the Summer term.

Clan Cross Country Run
Clan Cross Country Run
An internal “clan system” encourages everyone to get involved. We have four clans; green, blue, red and yellow. Clan Captains are nominated and each clan has students from all years. The Clans compete throughout the year and are awarded points and each clan member can make a difference in the overall score of their Clan. On the last day of summer term we hold our annual sports day and prize giving and the winning Clan is announced. Students are in a Clan from first year and remain in that Clan until they leave the school and so they develop a great loyalty to their Clan. Old Scholars still take an interest in how their Clan is doing.
