At Newtown School sport plays an essential part in the educational programme. A comprehensive Physical Education curriculum is supported by an extensive extracurricular programme. The emphasis is on participation. Our internal “clan competitions” encourage everyone to get involved. Students also represent the school in a wide range of sports teams with much success and honest endeavour.
The Winter sports timetable 2016/2017
Badminton takes place twice a week for all players in The Foy Hall. The players take part in the Waterford Schools Competition each year. Badminton in Newtown School is played by both girls and boys with a long tradition in both areas.
The Girls teams compete in the South East League and Cup competitions with many of the Girls going forward to gain Inter-provincial honours with the South East “province”. They also play many friendly matches throughout the season both locally and on occasion travelling to Dublin or Belfast to play against other schools. The teams groups are: Senior, Inter , Junior, Minor & 1st Year Girls.
The Boys Teams compete in the Munster Leagues at all age groups: Senior, Junior and Minor level. Some of the boys progress to represent Munster at Under 16 and Under 18 level. Hockey tours are a great part of the program. Many of the Senior players have benefited from the rebirth of The Waterford Men’s Hockey team and the weekly training sessions with them.
Teams across all age groups compete in Munster Schools competitions as well as playing friendly matched throughout the year. The Teams Groups are: Senior – 4th, 5th & 6th Year Junior – 2nd, 3rd and 4th Year Under 13/14 – 1st & 2nd Year. We wish all this year’s teams every success as their preparations get under way for the season ahead.
Swimming and Lifesaving
The swimming pool is open each afternoon facilitating swimming and lifesaving. The Clan swimming Gala is always a lively event. Lifesaving takes place in our 25m indoor swimming pool and it is a very valuable skill to learn along with providing a tough physical challenge for the swimmers.
Lifesaving follows the Irish Water Safety (IWS) courses leading all the way to International pool lifeguard qualifications.
Tennis is available all year on the Tennis courts. During the spring and summer terms teams compete in the Munster leagues. The In-House Clan tennis tournament provides great excitement during the Summer term.
Clan Cross Country Run
An internal “clan system” encourages everyone to get involved. We have four clans; green, blue, red and yellow. Clan Captains are nominated and each clan has students from all years. The Clans compete throughout the year and are awarded points and each clan member can make a difference in the overall score of their Clan. On the last day of summer term we hold our annual sports day and prize giving and the winning Clan is announced. Students are in a Clan from first year and remain in that Clan until they leave the school and so they develop a great loyalty to their Clan. Old Scholars still take an interest in how their Clan is doing.Find out more about the Newtown School Clans here
Equestrian activities play an important role in the life of many students in Newtown School. They compete in all disciplines and at every level ranging from day to day riding to competing at national and international level.
The All Ireland Inter Schools Show jumping Competition, a team event brings the Newtown Equestrian community closer together and students proudly compete along side each other to represent the school.
One event that is eagerly awaited is the Inter schools X-Country. Many students take part in this All Ireland event.
Newtown Students successfully compete internationally in show jumping, both on junior and senior teams while other students have represented Ireland in eventing.
