Newtown School was founded in 1798 by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). The ideals of its founders still inspire the School which today educates boys and girls for life in the 21st century.
Newtown School welcomes boarding and day students of all religious persuasions, and appreciates the contribution of all denominations to the school community. The school aims to foster a sense of caring for others and to communicate a set of values which reflects a balance between the material and the spiritual.
The school entered the Free Education Scheme in September 2014 and currently it has 399 students, 115 of whom are boarding students. This means that the school survives on the grants supplied by the DES for the running of the “day school“ and the boarding and other activities are funded through a range of charges. The school also generates income from the letting of its facilities both within term time (hockey pitch, swimming pool) and during holiday periods when it can also let the dormitory accommodation to host residential groups.
The management of the school is overseen by a Board of Management, who are the employers.
The school is currently entering an exciting phase of expansion and development with student numbers growing and a large building project in the planning phase at present.
